General power tool safety warnings

Image alternative WARNING Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.
The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
Work area safety
  • Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
  • Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
  • Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
Electrical safety
  • Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
  • Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
  • Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
  • Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
  • When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
  • If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
Personal safety
  • Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
  • Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
  • Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
  • Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
  • Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
  • Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
  • If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
  • Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.
Power tool use and care
  • Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
  • Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
  • Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
  • Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
  • Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
  • Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
  • Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
  • Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.
Battery tool use and care
  • Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack.
  • Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire.
  • When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
  • Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.
  • Do not use a battery pack or tool that is damaged or modified. Damaged or modified batteries may exhibit unpredictable behaviour resulting in fire, explosion or risk of injury.
  • Do not expose a battery pack or tool to fire or excessive temperature. Exposure to fire or temperature above 130° C (265 °F) may cause explosion.
  • Follow all charging instructions and do not charge the battery pack or tool outside the temperature range specified in the instructions. Charging improperly or at temperatures outside the specified range may damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.
Service
  • Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
  • Never service damaged battery packs. Service of battery packs should only be performed by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.

Additional safety instructions

  • Use the product and accessories only when they are in perfect working order.
  • Never tamper with or modify the product or accessories in any way.
  • Risk of injury due to falling tools and/or accessories. Before starting work, check that the battery and installed accessories are secure.
  • Do not touch oscillating parts - risk of injury!
  • Wear eye protection, a hard hat and ear protection and suitable respiratory protection while the product is in use.
  • Dust produced by grinding, sanding, cutting and drilling can contain dangerous chemicals. Some examples are: lead or lead-based paints; brick, concrete and other masonry products, natural stone and other products containing silicates; certain types of wood, such as oak, beech and chemically treated wood; asbestos or materials that contain asbestos. Determine the exposure of the operator and bystanders by means of the hazard classification of the materials to be worked. Implement the necessary measures to restrict exposure to a safe level, for example by the use of a dust collection system or by the wearing of suitable respiratory protection. The general measures for reducing exposure include:
  • working in an area that is well ventilated,
  • avoidance of prolonged contact with dust,
  • directing dust away from the face and body,
  • wearing protective clothing and washing exposed areas of the skin with water and soap.
  • Do not look directly into the light source (LEDs) incorporated in the power tool and do not direct the light at other persons’ faces.
  • Take frequent breaks and do physical exercises to improve the blood circulation in your fingers. High vibration during long periods of work can lead to disorders of the blood vessels and nervous system in the fingers, hands and wrists.
  • Keep the air vents clear at all times. Risk of burn injuries due to blocked air vents!
  • Use clamps or some other suitable means to firmly secure the workpiece to a stable supporting surface. Holding the workpiece only by hand or against your body leaves it unstable, which can lead to loss of control.
  • Before beginning work, check the working area for concealed electric cables or gas and water pipes. External metal parts of the product could give you an electric shock or cause an explosion if you accidentally damage an electric cable or a gas or water pipe.
  • Use the product for dry sanding/grinding only. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
  • Do not attempt to scrape off moistened materials (e.g. wallpaper) and do not perform scraping work on damp underlying materials. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
  • Do not pretreat the surface to be worked with liquids that contain solvents. The heat generated in the materials during scraping operations can result in the production of toxic vapors.
  • Keep your hands away from the cutting area. Do not reach underneath the workpiece. Risk of injury due to contact with the saw blade.
  • Always hold the product firmly with both hands and keep a firm footing at all times. The product is guided more safely by two hands.
  • Wear protective gloves when changing the accessory tool. The accessory tool runs hot when in use and there is a risk of burn injury.
  • Remove dirt, chips and other foreign matter that adheres to the accessory tool and/or the tool mount. Otherwise the accessory tool cannot be tightened correctly.
  • Switch the product on only after you have brought it to the working position. Switch the product on only when the accessory tool is not in contact with the workpiece.
  • Wait until the product has come to a complete stop before you lay it down.
  • Do not use accessories not specifically intended and recommended for this power tool by the tool manufacturer. The fact that an accessory can be attached to the power tool does not necessarily mean that it can be used safely.

Careful handling and use of batteries

  • Comply with the following safety instructions for the safe handling and use of Li-ion batteries. Failure to comply can lead to skin irritation, severe corrosive injury, chemical burns, fire and/or explosion.
  • Use only batteries that are in perfect working order.
  • Treat batteries with care in order to avoid damage and prevent leakage of fluids that are extremely harmful to health!
  • Do not under any circumstances modify or tamper with batteries!
  • Do not disassemble, crush or incinerate batteries and do not subject them to temperatures over 80 °C (176 °F).
  • Never use or charge a battery that has suffered an impact or been damaged in any other way. Check your batteries regularly for signs of damage.
  • Never use recycled or repaired batteries.
  • Never use the battery or a battery-operated power tool as a striking tool.
  • Never expose batteries to the direct rays of the sun, elevated temperature, sparking, or open flame. This can lead to explosions.
  • Do not touch the battery poles with your fingers, tools, jewelry, or other electrically conductive objects. This can damage the battery and also cause material damage and personal injury.
  • Keep batteries away from rain, moisture and liquids. Penetrating moisture can cause short circuits, electric shock, burns, fire and explosions.
  • Use only chargers and power tools approved for the specific battery type. Read and follow the relevant operating instructions.
  • Do not use or store the battery in explosive environments.
  • If the battery is too hot to touch, it may be defective. Put the battery in a place where it is clearly visible and where there is no risk of fire, at an adequate distance from flammable materials. Allow the battery to cool down. If it is still too hot to touch after an hour, the battery is faulty. Consult Hilti Service or read the document entitled "Instructions on safety and use for Hilti Li-ion batteries".
    Observe the special guidelines applicable to the transport, storage and use of lithium-ion batteries.

Intended use

The product described is a multitool. It is designed for sawing and cutting wood materials, plastic, plaster, non-ferrous metals and fasteners (e.g. unhardened nails or clips). It is also suitable for working soft wall tiles and for dry-sanding/grinding and scraping small surfaces. It is particularly suitable for working close to and flush with edges.
The product is suitable for dry use only, without water for cooling.

Status indicators of the Li‑ion battery

Hilti Nuron Li-ion batteries can indicate state of charge, fault messages and the battery's state of health.

Indicators for state of charge and fault messages

Short-press the release button of the battery to get whichever of the following status indications is applicable at the time.
WARNING
Risk of injury by a falling battery!
  • If the release button is pressed with a battery inserted in the product, subsequently check that the battery is correctly re-engaged and secure.
State of charge and, if applicable, faults are indicated constantly as long as the connected product is switched on.

Bring the product and the battery to the recommended working temperature and do not overload the product when it is in use.
If the message persists, consult Hilti Service.

The Li-ion battery and the product in which it is inserted are not compatible. Consult Hilti Service.
One (1) LED quick-flashes red
The Li-ion battery is locked and cannot be used. Consult Hilti Service.

Indicators showing the battery's state of health

To check the battery's state of health, press the release button and hold it down for longer than three seconds. The system does not detect a potential malfunction of the battery due to misuse, for example battery dropped or pierced, external heat damage, etc.

Noise information and vibration values in accordance with EN 62841

The sound pressure and vibration values given in these instructions were measured in accordance with a standardized test and can be used to compare one power tool with another. They can also be used for a preliminary assessment of exposure.
The data given represent the main applications of the power tool. However, if the power tool is used for different applications, with different accessory tools, or is poorly maintained, the data can vary. This can significantly increase exposure over the total working period.

Preparations at the workplace

WARNING
Risk of injury by inadvertent starting!
  • Before inserting the battery, make sure that the product is switched off.
  • Remove the battery before making any adjustments to the power tool or before changing accessories.
Observe the safety instructions and warnings in this documentation and on the product.

Charging the battery

  1. Before charging the battery, read the operating instructions for the charger.
  2. Make sure that the contacts on the battery and the contacts on the charger are clean and dry.
  3. Use an approved charger to charge the battery.

Inserting the battery

WARNING
Risk of injury by short circuit or falling battery!
  • Before inserting the battery, make sure that the contacts on the battery and the contacts on the product are free of foreign matter.
  • Make sure that the battery always engages correctly.
  1. Charge the battery fully before using it for the first time.
  2. Push the battery into the product until it engages with an audible click.
  3. Check that the battery is seated securely.

Removing the battery

  1. Press the battery release button.
  2. Remove the battery from the product.

Installing securing collar and depth gauge or parallel guide

  1. Slacken the clamping screw of the securing collar, using the hex on the depth gauge or the parallel guide.
  2. Align the 4 positioning lugs with the notches in the tool neck and slip the securing collar on to the tool neck.
  3. Turn the securing collar to the desired position.
  4. Tighten the clamping screw.
  5. Slacken the positioning screw of the securing collar.
  6. Insert the depth gauge or the parallel guide into the securing collar and secure it with the positioning screw.

Fitting the accessory tool

WARNING
Risk of injury due to unapproved accessory tool. Unsuitable accessory tools can suffer irreparable damage in operation or lead to loss of control of the product.
  • Make sure that the accessory tool’s permitted oscillation frequency is at least as high as the maximum oscillation frequency stated on the product.
WARNING
Risk of injury due to incorrect alignment of the accessory tool. When in operation, the accessory tool can cause severe cut injuries.
  • Never position the accessory tool facing toward the grip.
CAUTION
Risk of injury by clamping lever snapping back.
  • When closing the clamping lever, do not allow the clamping lever to snap back in an uncontrolled manner. Hold the clamping lever firmly and close it with caution.
The STARLOCK MAX tool mount is compatible with STARLOCK PLUS and STARLOCK accessory tools.

  1. Set the accessory tool on a flat surface.
  2. Open the clamping lever completely by turning it counter-clockwise past the first detent to the stop.
    • The clamping jaws of the tool holder are closed.
  3. Align the star-shaped tool mount of the product with its counterpart on the accessory tool and set the product on the accessory tool.
  4. Close the clamping lever completely by turning it clockwise in a controlled manner past the first detent to the stop.
    • The clamping jaws of the tool holder open, holding the accessory tool securely engaged.
  5. Check that the accessory tool is held securely.

Removing accessory tool

CAUTION
Risk of injury due to accessory tool! The accessory tool might be hot or have sharp edges.
  • Wear protective gloves when changing the accessory tool.
CAUTION
Risk of injury and damage due to falling accessory tool. The accessory tool can fall off and lead to injuries and/or damage to accessory tool and underlying material.
  • Hold the product and the accessory tool above but close to a surface when you remove the accessory tool.
  1. Open the clamping lever by turning it two clicks counter-clockwise.
    • The accessory tool is released and separates from the tool holder.
  2. Close the clamping lever by turning it clockwise.

Fall arrest

WARNING
Risk of injury by falling tool and/or accessory!
  • Use only the Hilti tool tether recommended for your product.
  • Prior to each use, always check the attachment point of the tool tether for possible damage.
  • Do not secure a tool tether to the belt hook. Do not use a belt hook to lift the product.
Comply with the national regulations for working at heights.
As drop arrester for this product, use only a combination of the Hilti retaining strap and the Hilti tool tether #2261970.
  • Secure the retaining strap to the installation openings for accessories. Check that it holds securely.
  • Secure one carabiner of the tool tether to the retaining strap and secure the second carabiner to a load-bearing structure. Check that both carabiners hold securely.
    Comply with the operating instructions of the Hilti retaining strap and those of the Hilti tool tether.

Operation

Observe the safety instructions and warnings in this documentation and on the product.

Switching on

  • Slide the on/off switch forward.
    • The motor runs.

Switching off

  • Slide the on/off switch back.
    • The engine stops.

Setting speed stage

WARNING
Risk of injury due to change of speed stage when tool is under load. Loss of control over the product.
  • Change the speed stage setting only when the product is either switched off or running under no load.
  • Hold the product firmly by the grip while changing the speed stage setting with the product running under no load.

You can select a speed stage before you switch on the product or change the speed stage while the product is running.
The LEDs show the current speed stage.
Setting with product switched off
  • Press the + button or the - button.
  • The indicator for speed stages is activated and shows the stage currently selected.
  • Use the +  / - buttons to select the speed stage.
  • The indicator for the speed stages is deactivated after 15 seconds.
  • The speed stage you selected is saved in memory.
Setting with product switched on
  • Use the +  / - buttons to select the speed stage.
  • The speed stage you select is set and remains saved in memory when you switch the product off.

Working with the multitool

WARNING
Risk of injury and damage. Misshapen, dulled or otherwise damaged accessory tools can break and cause injuries or damage to property.
  • Do not use worn or damaged accessory tools.
The multitool is designed for a multiplicity of tasks. Depending on the accessory tool installed, you can use the product to saw, sand/grind or scrape or to remove grout.
CuttingPlunge-cut saw blades are ideal for precision cuts in tight spaces, close to edges or flush with a surface.
  • Set the multitool to a medium speed stage. This gives you more control for plunge-cutting.
  • After making the initial plunge cut, you can select a higher speed stage for faster progress.
  • Apply moderate pressure and do not force the accessory tool into the material. Severe vibrations during the plunge stage of the cutting process are a sign that you are applying too much pressure.
Grinding
  • After switching on, allow the product to reach its full oscillation frequency before you touch the accessory tool against the workpiece.
  • Lift the product clear of the workpiece before switching off.
  • When sanding or grinding, use a continuous movement and apply light pressure. Use the entire sanding/grinding surface, not just the tip.
  • Rotate the backing pad at regular intervals. This will enable you to achieve even wear of the abrasive accessory tool and the backing pad.
Scraping
  • Set the multitool to a low to medium speed stage.
  • Position the accessory tool at the point where material has to be removed.
  • Apply moderate pressure. Excessive pressure can result in damage to the underlying material.
Removing grout
  • Before starting work measure the width of the grouted joint and select an appropriate accessory tool.
  • Set the multitool to a medium to high speed stage.
  • Use a back-and-forth movement and remove the grout in multiple passes.
  • Make sure that the accessory tool is in line with the joint and do not apply too much sideways pressure to the accessory tool during the operation.
  • Use the carbide-grain edging on the accessory tool as an indicator for plunge depth. To avoid damaging the underlying material, do not go deeper than the line where the carbide-grain edging stops.

Using depth gauge

CAUTION
Risk of injury and damage due to accessory tool. If depth gauge and accessory tool are allowed to touch each other this can result in damage to the depth gauge and/or the accessory tool.
  • Always set the depth gauge to a position where it cannot come into contact with the accessory tool.
The depth gauge enables you to control the plunge depth, for example when you plunge cut and need to make sure that objects or surfaces behind the workpiece are not damaged.

  1. Install the securing collar and the depth gauge.
    If the accessory tool is set at an angle, slacken the clamping screw and turn the securing collar until the depth gauge parallels the accessory tool. Retighten the clamping screw.
  2. Slacken the positioning screw.
  3. Set distance "X " between the tip of the accessory tool and the tip of the depth gauge.
  4. Tighten the positioning screw.

Using parallel guide

CAUTION
Risk of injury and damage due to accessory tool. If parallel guide and accessory tool come into contact, damage to the parallel guide and/or the accessory tool can result.
  • Always set the parallel guide to a position where it cannot come into contact with the accessory tool.

  • Make sure the accessory tool remains fully plunged in the workpiece over the entire stroke (oscillation).
  • Install the securing collar and the parallel guide.
  • Make sure that the parallel guide is parallel with the accessory tool.
  • Slacken the clamping screw of the securing collar.
  • Turn the securing collar so that the accessory tool will plunge into the workpiece at an angle.
  • Retighten the clamping screw.
  • Open the positioning screw.
  • Set a cutting depth at which the accessory tool remains fully plunged in the workpiece over the entire oscillating stroke.
  • Tighten the positioning screw.
  • Position the multitool with the parallel guide on the edge. Guide the multitool along the edge for the full length of the cut.
Using parallel guide as depth gaugeUse the parallel guide as a depth gauge when you are working with segment saw blades.

Care and maintenance

Care of the product
  • Carefully remove stubborn dirt.
  • Carefully clean the air vents, if present, with a dry, soft brush.
  • Use only a slightly damp cloth to clean the housing. Do not use cleaning agents containing silicone as these can attack the plastic parts.
  • Use a dry, clean cloth to clean the contacts of the product.
Care of the Li‑ion batteries
  • Never use a battery with clogged air vents. Clean the air vents carefully using a dry, soft brush.
  • Avoid unnecessary exposure of the battery to dust and dirt. Never expose the battery to high levels of moisture (e.g. by being dipped in water or left in the rain).
    If a battery has been soaked by moisture, treat it as a damaged battery. Isolate it in a non-flammable container and consult Hilti Service.
  • Keep the battery free of extraneous oil and grease. Do not permit dust or dirt to accumulate unnecessarily on the battery. Clean the battery with a dry, soft brush or a clean, dry cloth. Do not use cleaning agents containing silicone as these can attack the plastic parts.
    Do not touch the contacts of the battery and do not remove the factory-applied grease from the contacts.
  • Use only a slightly damp cloth to clean the housing. Do not use cleaning agents containing silicone as these can attack the plastic parts.
Maintenance
  • Check all visible parts and controls for signs of damage at regular intervals and make sure that they all function correctly.
  • Do not use the product if signs of damage are found or if parts malfunction. Immediately have the product repaired by Hilti Service.
  • After cleaning and maintenance, install all guards and protective devices and check that they are in full working order.

Transport and storage of cordless tools and batteries

During transport, batteries should be protected from excessive shock and vibration and isolated from any conductive materials or other batteries that may come in contact with the terminals and cause a short circuit. Comply with the locally applicable regulations for transporting batteries.
  • Do not send batteries through the mail. Consult your shipper for instructions on how to ship undamaged batteries.
  • Prior to each use and before and after prolonged transport, check the product and the batteries for damage.

Hilti Li-ion batteries

Instructions for safety and useThis documentation uses the term battery to describe rechargeable Hilti Li-ion battery packs containing several Li-ion cells joined together. These batteries are to be used in Hilti power tools exclusively. Use only genuine Hilti batteries!
Description Hilti batteries have cell-management and cell-protection systems.
The batteries are composed of cells that contain lithium-ion storage materials capable of providing high specific energy density. Li-ion cells have a minimal memory effect, but they are very susceptible to external impact, deep discharge, and high temperatures.
The products approved for use with Hilti batteries can be found in your Hilti Store or at: www.hilti.group
Safety
  • Comply with the following safety instructions for the safe handling and use of Li-ion batteries. Failure to comply can lead to skin irritation, severe corrosive injury, chemical burns, fire and/or explosion.
  • Treat batteries with care in order to avoid damage and prevent leakage of fluids that are extremely harmful to health!
  • Do not under any circumstances modify or tamper with batteries!
  • Do not disassemble, crush or incinerate batteries and do not subject them to temperatures over 80 °C.
  • Never use or charge a battery that has suffered an impact or been damaged in any other way. Check your batteries regularly for signs of damage.
  • Never use recycled or repaired batteries.
  • Never use the battery or a battery-operated power tool as a striking tool.
  • Never expose batteries to the direct rays of the sun, elevated temperature, sparking, or open flame. This can lead to explosions.
  • Do not touch the battery poles with your fingers, tools, jewelry, or other electrically conductive objects. This can damage the battery and also cause material damage and personal injury.
  • Keep batteries away from rain, moisture and liquids. Penetrating moisture can cause short circuits, electric shock, burns, fire and explosions.
  • Use only chargers and power tools approved for the specific battery type. Read and follow the relevant operating instructions.
  • Do not use or store the battery in explosive environments.
  • If the battery is too hot to touch it may be defective. Put the battery in a place where it is clearly visible and where there is no risk of fire, at an adequate distance from flammable materials. Allow the battery to cool down. If it is still too hot to touch after an hour, the battery is faulty. Follow the instructions in the section headed What to do in case of a battery fire .
What to do in case of damaged batteries
  • Always contact Hilti when a battery is damaged.
  • Never use a battery that is leaking fluid.
  • Avoid direct eye and/or skin contact with fluid leaking from a battery. Always wear protective gloves and eye protection when undertaking tasks involving battery fluid.
  • Use a chemical spill cleanup kit to remove leaked battery fluid. Comply with the locally applicable cleanup regulations for battery fluid.
  • To store a damaged battery, place the battery in a non-flammable container and cover the battery with dry sand, chalk powder (CaCO3) or silicate (Vermiculite). Then seal the lid air-tight and store the container away from flammable gases, liquids or objects.
  • Dispose of the container at your Hilti Store , or consult your local governmental garbage disposal or public health and safety resources for disposal instructions. Comply with the locally applicable regulations for transporting damaged batteries!
What to do in case of dysfunctional batteries
  • Watch for abnormal battery behavior, such as faulty charging, unusually long charging times, noticeable power loss, unusual LED activity, or leaking fluids. These are signs of an internal problem.
  • If you suspect an internal battery problem, contact Hilti Service.
  • A battery that no longer works, cannot be recharged or leaks fluid has to be disposed of correctly. See the section headed Maintenance and disposal .
What to do in case of a battery fire
    WARNING
    Battery fire hazard! A burning battery releases hazardous and potentially explosive liquids and fumes that can lead to corrosion injuries, burns or explosions.
  • Wear your personal protective equipment when you tackle a battery fire.
  • Provide sufficient venting to permit hazardous and potentially explosive fumes to escape.
  • Leave the room immediately in case of intense smoke emission.
  • Consult a doctor in case of any skin or respiratory irritation.
  • Alert the fire service before you start tackling the fire.
  • Use only water to tackle a battery fire and keep as far from the fire as effective extinguishing permits. Powder fire extinguishers and fire blankets are ineffective with Li-ion batteries. Fire in nearby materials can be extinguished with appropriate extinguishing agents.
  • Do not try to move large quantities of burning batteries. Instead, isolate the batteries by removing unaffected materials from the immediate vicinity.
In the case of a battery that does not cool down, or a smoking or burning battery:
  • Scoop the battery up with a shovel and drop it into a bucket of water, which will reduce the risk of igniting adjacent cells that have not yet reached run-away temperature.
  • Leave the battery in the bucket for at least 24 hours until it has cooled down completely.
  • See the section headed What to do in case of damaged batteries .
Shipping and storage
  • Ambient operating temperature to be kept between -17°C and +60°C / 1°F and 140°F.
  • Storage temperature to be kept between -20°C and +40°C / -4°F and 104°F.
  • Do not store batteries on the charger. Always remove the battery from the charger when the charging operation has completed.
  • Store batteries in a cool and dry place. Cool storage will increase battery life. Never store batteries where they are exposed to direct sunlight, on sources of heat or behind glass.
  • Do not send batteries through the mail. Consult your shipper for instructions on how to ship undamaged batteries.
  • Never transport batteries in bulk form (loose, unprotected). During transport, batteries should be protected from excessive shock and vibration and isolated from any conductive materials or other batteries that may come in contact with the terminals and cause a short circuit. Comply with the locally applicable regulations for transporting batteries.
Maintenance and disposal
  • Keep the battery free of oil and grease. Do not permit dust or dirt to accumulate unnecessarily on the battery. Clean the battery with a dry, soft brush or a clean, dry rag.
  • Never use a battery with clogged ventilation slots. Clean the ventilation slots carefully using a dry, soft brush.
  • Prevent unnecessary exposure of the battery to dust or debris and never subject the battery to soaking moisture (e.g., submerged in water or left out in the rain).
  • If a battery is exposed to soaking moisture, treat it as a damaged battery and isolate it in a non-flammable container.

  • Improper disposal may cause health hazards from leaking gases or fluids. Dispose of the battery at your Hilti Store , or consult your local governmental garbage disposal or public health and safety resources for disposal instructions.
