Wood to concrete fastening
Our wood-on-concrete solutions are field-tested and offer significant load values
When it comes to building and securing wood structures to concrete, you can trust our mechanical anchors. We offer seismically approved anchor fasteners for wood-concrete connections, including our Bolt Anchor HST3 for high static and seismic loads in cracked and un-cracked concrete. And for added peace of mind, designs with our PROFIS Engineering software can help manage issues with small edge distances and choosing the most appropriate fastening option such as expansion anchors, chemical anchors or concrete screws. In addition, for pre-fabricated wood structures fastening to concrete, we also offer a design solution that optimises load bearing points - alongside products such as our HCW connectors which helps to position and level wood on concrete with pinpoint accuracy.

Get support with load tests on undefined substrates
Because not all concrete is the same
Surfaces can conceal different concrete standards depending on use. For new timber buildings on defined and recognised concrete substrates, our fastening solutions are approved across the board. With our pre-assembled HCW Wood Connectors, dowels and concrete screws, you can attach wooden beams to concrete foundations or securely anchor wooden components in a concrete wall.
However, when working on older and existing buildings, you may be dealing with undefined substrates. At Hilti, we will be happy to help on your projects with our proven expertise on concrete and masonry. We can support you on site with dowel load tests, whenever you need to attach wooden elements to a surface when no reliable technical data is available.

Fastening wood to wood
Stable timber joints are the key to solid timber constructions
The different types of wood joints used will influence joinery steps and assembly processes, as well as material costs on a project.
In timber engineering, mechanical connections with an additional connecting part, such as a timber construction screw, play an essential role.
In multi-storey timber construction, beams, columns, wall and ceiling elements are prefabricated and built on site. Different materials such as cross-laminated timber, hardwood or glulam, and a large number of connection details result in countless connection options. With fasteners, structural planning is faced with the choice between individual steel construction solutions or approved standard solutions. While individual steel solution options cost less vs an approved solution, approved solutions offer quicker installation and reduced labour costs.

Innovation you can trust
To enable carpenters on site to handle construction projects in multi-storey timber construction, with the optimal balance between joinery, assembly and material costs, Hilti is continuously developing innovative joining solutions for wood. These include wooden connectors for cross-laminated timber panels, screws or glued-in threaded rods, where a stable connection of wooden beams, wooden frames or other wooden parts can be achieved.

Connectors for cross-laminated timber
The new P2P connector with ETA approval is an innovative wood connection system based on the double dovetail principle. It is suitable for the efficient connection of cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements – for example in multi-storey timber construction. In contrast to conventional joining methods, such as cover board and nails, the P2P is quickly and easily assembled with an impact wrench and adapter. The CLT panels are automatically connected in a form-fitting manner. This allows for time savings of up to 80% compared to traditional methods.

Timber construction screws
ETA-approved timber construction screws have a wide range of applications for different timber building materials such as solid wood, cross-laminated timber, laminated beam timber or even different panel materials. Hilti timber construction screws cover use classes I and II. They guarantee secure wood-to-timber connections for applications such as façade fastenings, tensile shear connections, transverse connections, lateral beam reinforcement, axial and shear connections and many more.

Hanger bolts
Our high-strength hanger bolts with their metric ISO thread are particularly suitable for fastening and assembling prefabricated wooden structures. Other hanger bolts are used to fasten building services applications such as pipelines, ventilation ducts or cable trays.

Glued-in threaded rods
To create a stable construction in a confined space, connection with threaded rods is a third option. Glued-in rods (GIR) can be used to create high-strength wood-to-wood joints. Based on the selection of suitable parameters, the connections can be dimensioned from ductile to rigid. The Hilti HIT-RE-500 V4 Injection mortar allows threaded rods to be attached easily and securely. This means that you have an approved solution with ETA and general type approval (DIBt).

Wood to steel fastening
There are several projects that feature and benefit from wood to steel fastening.
As both surfaces behave and react differently under various conditions, you need to ensure an approach that offers reliable fastening – especially when load bearing dynamics need to be considered.
Traditional methods for fastening wood to steel involve self drilling screws. However, we also offer a range of powder actuated tools that offer more productive and faster fixing methods for a range of applications in concrete and steel. These include semi and fully automatic tools that are available to buy or lease direct from us.

Typical applications and environments for wood to steel fastening
General building and construction
Attaching timber to steel beams is an everyday feature in commercial and residential construction e.g. attaching timber battens to steel sections for drylining. Other projects in this space where fastening wood to steel is common include stair installation, panelling and timber decking. When installing external cladding, wood-steel fastening applications can be common place, as well as for modular building construction where timber components need to be fastened to steel frames.
Manufacturing and interior finishing
Fabrication in industrial settings is an area where wood-steel fastening is maximised for custom or irregular components. This can also extend into bespoke furniture or interior fittings.
Transport and shipping
For selected marine or nautical environments, wood-steel fastenings can be used for elements with the frame or creating a deck that is fixed to steel or the hull of a ship. From a logistics perspective, steel-wood fastenings can also be used to reinforce pallets and also modify containers, vehicles or trailers.
Signage and leisure
In recreational settings you can find wood-steel fastening on metal frames for trail bridges, elevated walkways and access points. Seating areas such as park benches, coverings and playground apparatus for children also heavily feature wood-steel fastening. Large-scale temporary event staging and signage also uses wood-steel fastening.
