Product information

Safety

General safety instructions

  • Comply with the following safety instructions for the safe handling and use of Li-ion batteries. Failure to comply can lead to skin irritation, severe corrosive injury, chemical burns, fire and/or explosion.
  • Use the product and accessories only when they are in perfect working order.
  • Never tamper with or modify the product or accessories in any way. Do not attempt to open the product.
  • Do not touch the electrical contacts with your fingers, tools, jewelry, or other electrically conductive objects.
  • Do not short-circuit the outputs of the product.
  • Close the protective caps of the connections whenever the connections are not being used.
  • Do not disassemble, squash or incinerate the product and do not subject it to temperatures over 80 °C.
  • Never expose the product to the direct rays of the sun, elevated temperature, sparking, or open flame. This can lead to explosions.
  • Keep the product away from rain, moisture and liquids. Penetrating moisture can cause short circuits, electric shock, burns, fire and explosions.
  • Do not use or store the product in explosive environments.
  • Use the product only within its specified limits.
  • Treat the product with care in order to avoid damage and prevent leakage of fluids that are extremely harmful to health!
  • Make sure that the product stands securely when it is being used. Set the product down only on a non-slip surface. Avoid allowing the product to project over an edge.
  • Make sure that the connected consumer has a supply cord of adequate length; it is not permissible for the supply cord to be under strain.
  • Do not use or attempt to charge the product if it has suffered an impact or is damaged in any other way. Check the product regularly for signs of damage.
  • Do not stand on the product (do not use it as a substitute for a ladder).
  • Do not transport the product by crane or with hoists.
  • Comply with your locally applicable regulations for the safe use of electrical consumers.
  • Do not connect a faulty consumer to the product.
  • Do not connect generators to the outputs of the product.
  • Charge the product only with the charging cord supplied.
  • Make sure that product and consumer are both switched off before you connect the consumer. Always switch the consumer off after use.
  • Do not use the product to power life-supporting medical devices.
  • If the product is too hot to touch, it may be defective. Put the product in a place where it is clearly visible and where there is no risk of fire, at an adequate distance from flammable materials. Allow it to cool down. If the product is still too hot to touch after an hour, it is faulty. Consult Hilti Service or read the document entitled "Instructions on safety and use for Hilti Li-ion batteries".
    Observe the special guidelines applicable to the transport, storage and use of lithium-ion batteries.

The product described is a portable energy system. It is designed for powering corded consumers.

LED indicators

The Hilti B 3600 energy system can indicate the state of charge and fault messages.
If fault messages are detected the LEDs show or flash in accordance with the current state of charge.
Status

Eight (8) LEDs show constantly green
 State of charge: 100 % to 88 %
Seven (7) LEDs show constantly green.
 State of charge: 87 % to 76 %
Six (6) LEDs show constantly green.
 State of charge: 75 % to 63 %
Five (5) LEDs show constantly green.
 State of charge: 62 % to 50 %
Four (4) LEDs show constantly green
 State of charge: 49 % to 37 %
Three (3) LEDs show constantly green
 State of charge: 36 % to 25 %

 The Li-ion battery is completely discharged. Charge the battery.

 The portable energy system is switched off. Switch it on.
If no LEDs light up after the system has been switched on, consult Hilti Service.
The LED corresponding to the current state of charge flashes green (while charging is in progress).
 The Li-ion battery is being charged.
One or more LEDs show constantly yellow.
 A current spike occurred and the AC outputs were deactivated.
Unplug all consumers. Turn the rotary switch to the position for standby mode Image alternative. Wait 10 seconds and turn the rotary switch back to the position for operational mode Image alternative. The energy system is again ready for use.
If the message persists, consult Hilti Service.
One or more LEDs flash yellow.
 The energy system is outside the permissible temperature range. Operation or charging has been interrupted.
Unplug the consumer or the charging cord from the energy system and switch the energy system to standby mode Image alternative. Then slowly bring the energy system back into the permissible temperature range. As soon as the permissible range is reached, the energy system can again be used or charged.
If the message persists, consult Hilti Service.
One (1) LED quick-flashes red
 A system fault has occurred. Disconnect the consumer or the charging cord, switch the energy system to transport mode Image alternative and consult Hilti Service.

Rotary switch

The rotary switch has the following three positions:

 In transport mode all connections are inactive and the energy system is switched off.
Image alternative Standby / charging operation
 In standby mode the AC outputs are de-energized, the AC charging input is active. The LEDs do not show.

 In operational mode the AC outputs are active, a consumer can be connected and operated. The LEDs indicate the state of charge or fault messages.

Operation

Observe the safety instructions and warnings in this documentation and on the product.

Charging

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the position for standby mode Image alternative.
  2. Connect the charging cord supplied with the product to the AC charging input and turn the bayonet connector clockwise until it latches.
    To ensure operability, make sure that the bayonet connection latches correctly.
  3. Connect the charging cord to a power outlet.
    • The LEDs that show green indicate the current state of charge.
    • If the energy storage battery is fully charged, all the LEDs show green for 10 seconds. The state of charge indicator then goes out.
  4. After charging, disconnect the charging cord and switch the energy system to transport mode Image alternative.

Operation

WARNING
Electric shock hazard! Electric shock and/or component damage possible.
  • Whenever more than one consumer is connected, the consumers have to be protected by a portable residual current device (PRCD).
  • Comply with the connection possibilities / combinations as described.

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the position for operational mode Image alternative. The energy system is activated and the LEDs flash.
    • If one or more LEDs subsequently show green, this indicates that the energy system is ready for operation.
    • If one LED flashes green after the start sequence, this indicates that the energy system is completely discharged. Charge the battery.
    • If no LEDs show after the start sequence, there is a fault in the system. Consult Hilti Service.
  2. Connect a consumer to the AC output.
  3. Comply with the following instructions for powering more than one consumer off the energy system:
    • If a consumer is powered off a vacuum cleaner connected to the energy system, the consumer has to be connected to the vacuum cleaner via a portable residual current device.
    • For connecting two consumers, Hilti offers a splitter with integral portable residual current device.
    • If multi-outlet power strips are used, each connected consumer has to be protected by a portable residual current device of its own.
  4. During operation, the LEDs indicate the current state of charge.
  5. To interrupt use of the energy system, turn the rotary switch to the position for standby mode Image alternative.
  6. To switch the energy system off completely, turn the rotary switch to the position for transport mode Image alternative.

Care and maintenance

WARNING
Risk of injury by activated product !
  • Always switch the product to transport mode Image alternative before carrying out care and maintenance tasks.
Care of the product
  • Carefully remove stubborn dirt.
  • Use only a slightly damp cloth to clean the housing. Do not use cleaning agents containing silicone as these can attack the plastic parts.
  • Use a dry, clean cloth to clean the contacts of the product.
  • Never expose the product to high levels of moisture (e.g. by being dipped in water or left in the rain).
    If the product has been soaked by moisture, treat it in the same way as a damaged battery. Isolate it in a non-flammable container and consult Hilti Service.
Maintenance
  • Check all visible parts and controls for signs of damage at regular intervals and make sure that they all function correctly.
  • Do not use the product if signs of damage are found or if parts malfunction. Immediately have the product repaired by Hilti Service.
  • After cleaning and maintenance, install all guards and protective devices and check that they are in full working order.

Changing fuse

WARNING
Electric shock hazard! Attempting care and maintenance with the supply cord connected to a power outlet can lead to severe injury and burns.
  • Always unplug the supply cord before carrying out care and maintenance tasks.
CAUTION
Fire hazard due to incorrect fuse! A fuse with the wrong specifications can cause a fire.
  • Use only a fuse of the same type, the same current rating and the same fuse characteristic.
  1. Unscrew the fuse cap.
  2. Remove the fuse. Insert a new fuse.

Transport and storage

Transport
  • Transport the product only when it is in transport mode Image alternative.
  • During transport, the product should be protected from excessive shock and vibration. Comply with the locally applicable regulations for transporting batteries.
  • Do not send batteries through the mail. Consult your shipper for instructions on how to ship undamaged batteries.
  • Prior to each use and before and after prolonged transport, check the product for damage.
  • It is not permissible to transport the product in an aircraft. Consult airline personnel if applicable.
Storage
  • Store the product in a cool and dry place. Comply with the temperature limits stated in the technical data.
  • Store the product only when it is in transport mode Image alternative.
  • Do not keep the product in storage for a long period of time with the battery discharged. This could lead to deep discharge. Charge the product every three months at the latest.
  • Never leave the product in direct sunlight, on sources of heat, or behind glass.
  • Store the product where it cannot be accessed by children or unauthorized persons.
  • Prior to each use and before and after prolonged storage, check the product for damage.

Troubleshooting

If a problem occurs, always observe the energy system's LED indicators. See the section headed LED indicators .
If the trouble you are experiencing is not listed in this table or you are unable to rectify the problem by yourself, contact Hilti Service.

  • Cover the terminals with a non-conductive material (such as electrical tape) to prevent short circuiting.
  • Dispose of the product in such a way that it cannot become accessible to children.
  • Dispose of the product at your Hilti Store , or consult your local governmental garbage disposal or public health and safety resources for disposal instructions.

Hilti Li-ion batteries

Instructions for Use and OperationThis documentation uses the term battery to describe rechargeable Hilti Li-ion battery packs containing several Li-Ion cells joined together. These batteries are to be used in Hilti power tools exclusively. When using Hilti power tools, use Hilti original battery packs!
Hilti batteries are state of the art and are equipped with cell management and cell protection systems.
DescriptionThe batteries are composed of cells that contain lithium-ion storage materials that are capable providing high specific energy density. Unlike NiMH and NiCd batteries, Li-ion batteries have a minimal memory effect, but they are extremely susceptible to external impact, deep discharge, and high temperatures. See Safety WARNING

Safety
  • Batteries must not be modified or tampered with!
  • Never use recycled or repaired batteries conducted by non-Hilti companies.
  • Do not use or charge batteries that have suffered mechanical impact, have been dropped from a height or show signs of damage. Examine your batteries regularly for signs of damage, such as shredding, cuts or punctures.
  • Never use the battery or a battery-operated power tool as a hammer.
  • Avoid eye or skin contact with leaking liquids!

  • Damaged batteries can leak fluid which may moisten adjacent objects. Clean these objects with warm soapy water and replace the damaged batteries.

  • Never expose batteries to elevated temperature, sparking, or an open flame because the battery may explode.
  • Do not touch the battery poles with your fingers, tools, jewelry, or other metallic objects because this may cause a short circuit, electrical shock, burns or explosions.
  • Keep batteries away from rain or moisture. Penetrating moisture can cause short circuits, electrical shock, burns or explosions.
  • Only use chargers and power tools approved for the specific battery type. Read and follow the instructions in the respective user manuals.
  • Do not store or use the battery in explosion-prone environments containing combustible liquids or gases. An unexpected battery malfunction can cause an explosion under those conditions.
What to do in case of damaged batteries
  • If a Hilti battery is found to be damaged, contact your Hilti service partner.
  • If a battery is leaking, use safety goggles and gloves to avoid direct eye or skin contact.
  • To store a damaged battery, place the battery in a non-flammable container and cover the battery with dry sand, chalk powder (CaCO3) or silicate (Vermiculite). Then, close the lid air-tight and store the container away from flammable gases, liquids, or objects.
  • Dispose of the container at your Hilti Store , or consult your local governmental garbage disposal or public health and safety resources for disposal instructions. Do not ship or mail damaged batteries!
  • Use a chemical spill cleanup kit to remove leaked battery fluid.
What to do in case of dysfunctional batteries
  • Watch for abnormal battery behavior, such as faulty charging or unusually long charging times, noticeable power loss, unusual charger LED activity, or leaking fluids. These are signs of an internal problem.
  • If you suspect an internal battery problem, contact your Hilti service partner.
  • Should the battery be in operational or no longer chargeable or leaking fluid, dispose of it as described above.

What to do in case of a battery fire
    WARNING
    Battery fire hazard! A burning battery releases hazardous and potentially explosive liquids and fumes that can lead to corrosion injuries, burns or explosions.
  • Wear your personal protective equipment when you tackle a battery fire.
  • Provide sufficient venting to permit hazardous and potentially explosive fumes to escape.
  • Leave the room immediately in case of intense smoke emission.
  • Consult a doctor in case of any skin or respiratory irritation.
  • Battery fires should be extinguished with water. Powder fire extinguishers and fire blankets are ineffective with Li-Ion batteries. Fires started by a lithium-ion battery in nearby materials can be extinguished with any appropriate extinguishing agent.
  • Do not try to move large quantities of damaged, burning, or leaking batteries. Instead, remove surrounding materials and isolate the batteries. If the scale of the fire is larger than can be extinguished with available methods, contact the nearest firefighting authority.
In the case of a single burning battery,:
  • Scoop the battery up with a shovel and drop it into a bucket of water, which will reduce the risk of igniting adjacent cells that have not yet reached run-away temperature.
  • Wait for the battery to cool down completely.

Shipping and storage
  • Ambient operating temperature to be kept between -17°C and +60°C / 1°F and 140°F.
  • Storage temperature to be kept between -20°C and +40°C / -4°F and 104°F.
  • Do not store batteries on the charger. Separate battery from charger after use.
  • Store batteries in a cool and dry place. Cool storage will increase battery life. Never store batteries where they are exposed to direct sunlight, on sources of heat or behind glass.
  • Batteries should not be sent through the mail. Consult your shipper for instructions on how to ship undamaged batteries.
  • Do not transport batteries in bulk, loosely packaged. During transport, batteries should be protected from excessive shock and vibration and isolated from any conductive materials or other batteries that may come in contact with the terminals and cause a short circuit.
Maintenance and disposal
  • Keep the battery free of oil and grease. If the battery is exposed to oil or grease, remove the contamination with a clean dry rag.
  • Never use a battery with clogged venting slots. Clean the venting slots carefully with a soft brush to prevent debris from entering the battery.
  • Prevent unnecessary exposure of the battery to dust or debris and never subject the battery to soaking moisture (e.g., submerged in water or left out in the rain).
  • If the battery becomes dirty, clean it with a soft brush or clean, dry rag.
  • If a battery is exposed to soaking moisture, treat it as a damaged battery and isolate it in a non-flammable container.

  • Improper disposal may cause health hazards from leaking gases or fluids. Dispose of the battery at your Hilti Store , or consult your local garbage disposal or public health and safety resources for disposal instructions. Do not ship or mail damaged batteries!
  • Do not dispose of batteries as household waste.
  • Dispose of your battery out of the reach of children. Cover the terminals with a non-conductive material (such as electrical tape) to prevent short circuiting.
