Why do I get brick edge failure on hollow clay brick with only 1 kN vertical shear and no lateral forces
It seems that anchors in brickwork are so poor that they cannot be considered for most designs

Thank you for your question, the anchorage performance is limited by the selected masonry unit. If a low strength material is selected then the resulting load resistance is low as the masonry is the governing factor. I'd suggest as an example using the unit you have selected against the London Yellow Multistock for example and you will see different values.
