Embedment depth in blockwork

Embedment depth in blockwork

Concrete block in stretcher bond - optimised embedment depth will not move from 50mm and shows brick breakout - Why?
Stretcher bond will not allow me to change the embedment depth!
All can be resolved in Header bond - why is this happening?

Thank you for your question. I suspect the block you are using is 100mm thick and the test data available is based upon a fixing installed within the block so that the back of the block does not burst hence it is restricted to 50mm embedment depth. Changing to a Header bond the block is repositioned so the 100mm becomes the width not the thickness in that circumstance would allow a greater embedment depth providing the criteria has published test data available otherwise I would expect it to remain at original shallower embedment depth. You can of course, if you have the header arrangement and desire a deeper embedment depth carry out your own preliminary or destructive testing onsite to establish the allowable resistance. I'd suggest BS8539:2012 as a source of material.
