Concrete edge failure

Concrete edge failure

Hi Hilti,

I have used Hilti profis to do a plate check. The plate experiences shear eccentric to the fixture. I have attached the file to this query.

My questions are:

  1. For the shear edge failure (§4.3 in calculation) how is the Ved calculated? My interpretation of BS EN 1992-1-2 §7.2.2.5 is that only the fasteners closest to the edge are checked. Ved shown in the check is closer to the full applied load. If I apply the load as an equivalent torsion and use approach on figure 6.5 of BS EN 1992-1-4 I get different answer.
  2. If I'm supplying reinforcement as per BS EN 1992-1-4 §7.2.2.6 is NRk,re verified against Ved shown on §4.3 or against sum of shear in relevant row of fasteners.

Thank you for your enquiry and uploading your pe. File. Having reviewed the file, I can confirm that your modelled anchor arrangement does not fall within the allowed anchor criteria of EN1992 Part 4. Please see section 1.2 Type of fasteners and fastenings group.

You will have noticed that when analysing your Profis  model the software will  have prompted you to select the Sofa Method as a way of calculating your connection . This methodology is to ensure a distribution of the shear forces amongst all the anchors by filling the gap between the clearance hole in the baseplate and the shaft of the anchor utilising an improved design method FIB 58 (Design of anchorages in concrete)  which is one of the methods implemented that redistributes the shear forces.

Whilst the above touches upon what the software doing in your case your arrangement is beyond 3 x 3 it reverts to the EN1992-4 approach , allocating all the shear load to the front row.

Now having said that in connections with arrangement of up to 3 x 3 then the SOFA approach can calculate to the back row in determining the concrete resistance.

As an example, to illustrate, I’ve reattached your pe file on a qualifying arrangement so using fewer anchors but larger diameter which now meets the steel criteria and significantly reduces the concrete edge breakout and pryouthowever even by doing this the concrete is still failing by a large margin.

As for the use of supplementary reinforcement, it is not possible as your arrangement as mentioned previous does not fall within  EN1992 Part 4.

Hi, Please find the file re uploaded. When you go to save the file, it might appear as an XML file, please change this to a .pe file extension and, the file should be then be visible in the normal format which you can drag and drop into the software.
