How does a concrete breaker work?

Concrete breakers and demolition hammers use an internal piston mechanism to deliver fast and forceful impact on a surface via an attachment. These attachments, known as chisels, strike the surface rapidly with force to break down hard materials including asphalt or concrete. In addition, breakers can use petrol, mains electric or battery power to operate.

What size concrete breaker do I need for my job?

The best way of categorising concrete breakers is by weight. Generally, the heavier the tool, the harder the task it can handle.

As a general guide, here’s what each category of breaker is best used for:

  • 5–10 kg:

Renovation and DIY tasks such as tile and flooring removal

  • 10–20 kg:

Outdoor jobs including patio breaking and landscaping

  • 20 kg+:

Heavy-duty and commercial tasks such as road works, groundworks and foundations

While lighter tools are easier to control for their respective tasks, heavier tools offer more power and a requirement for skilled operation.

What chisel should I use with a concrete breaker?

There are several types of chisels and inserts for use with demolition hammers and concrete breakers. These will usually have an SDS Plus or SDS Max shank connection.

Common chisel types include:

  • Point chisels

which are used for general breaking and initial breakthrough on surfaces

  • Flat chisels

which can be used for tile removal, as well as metal work, removing masonry and general demotion.

  • Spade chisels

which can be used on solid brick, landscaping tasks, roofing and other heavy duty tasks

Choosing the right chisel and tool will help you complete the job effectively and efficiently.
