Ideal for plumbing press tool tasks

If you’re a trade professional who uses a press fit tool across your jobs, you’ll know that having a reliable product can help to deliver a high-quality finish and standard of work. While also known as a plumbing press tool or pipe press tool, a press fit tool can make the installation of metal and plastic pipes more efficient, without compromising the quality of the job.

Our product offering in this range offers compact, versatile and heavy-duty options, with a press force up to 32kN, to ensure that we have a tool to cover all your needs. This includes pressing capacity up to 108mm on metal pipes and 110mm pressing capacity for plastic pipes. If that wasn’t enough, added benefits such as 350° head rotation, contoured grip, balanced weight and pressure sensors to establish improved connection reliability on selected products make them easier to handle and reliable when operating.

*These values are system dependent. In order to ensure correct and safe pressing, consult the original instruction manual from the system supplier.

What is a pipe press or press fit tool used for?

A pipe press tool is used to create water-tight connections by compressing fittings directly on to a pipe. This could either be for copper, steel or plastic piping.

It is commonly used by professionals such as plumbers, gas and heating engineers.

How does a pipe press / pressing tool work?

Pipe press tools are available in manual or hydraulic battery-powered variants. They both work by applying force to help attach fittings, which usually contain a seal or an ‘O’ ring, to a pipe. The end result is a watertight or airtight connection.

A hydraulic press will use a system that comprises of a hydraulic pump and cylinder to generate force through the jaws to attach pipe fittings. Cordless versions are normally powered by a battery.

Manual pipe press tools are hand operated and require more physical effort vs battery powered hydraulics, but return the same result.

What size pipe can a press tool work with?

The size of pipe will influence which tool you need to use.

Most compact pipe press tools are compatible with pipes up to around 35mm, while larger professional tools will work on pipes up to 110mm.

Tools that work on larger pipe sizes, such as Hilti’s NPR 32 XL-22 Pipe press tool, will also require interchangeable pressing jaws to account for larger size projects.

Can pipe press fittings leak after they have been installed?

Yes they can, but not necessarily because of the tool itself. Press fittings can be prone to leaks if the user hasn’t used the correct jaws or has worked with damaged fittings during the installation process.

The other causes could be down to tool calibration issues and/or an incomplete pressing cycle.

Do you need different jaws for different pipes and tasks?

Yes you do.

Both compact and large size press tools will use interchangeable jaws to manage different sizes and pipe material such as copper or steel.

In addition, there are various jaw/ press profiles which are relevant for different uses. These are identified by letters, with the main ones being:

  • M – widely used for copper and steel

  • V – usually copper press systems for gas installations

  • TH – used for multilayer pipe approach

  • U – used for plastic and composite pipes

How often should a pipe press tool be calibrated?

As pipe pressing is a crucial part of any wider project or maintenance, having a calibrated tool ensures safety and good practice for everyone involved.

Most major manufacturers advise to get pressing tools calibrated after a certain number of pressing cycles or at least once a year. In addition to this, servicing can be a separate part of the maintenance schedule, to ensure your tool works as it should and minimises the prospect of leaks.

However, if you’re a Hilti customer you can benefit from a yearly certification and tool inspection service to keep your tools up-and-running
