What is a hydraulic cable cutter?

A hydraulic cable cutter, as the name suggests, uses hydraulic pressure to cut regular, thick and industrial-grade cables. The force these cutters generate can cut through copper and steel (including reinforced steel) with minimal effort.

Hydraulic cable cutters are used on tasks across several industries. You can usually find them being used for electrical and mains installations, major infrastructure projects, or frequently on jobs in the telecoms industry.

How does a hydraulic cable cutter work?

A hydraulic cable cutter uses hydraulic pressure to cut through the thickest and strongest cable. It works using an internal hydraulic pump which pressurises hydraulic oil, similar to that used in a car jack or power steering components, which in turn applies force to the cutting head/ blade to operate.

While most modern hydraulic cutters use battery power to operate, some require manual operation with a pump to increase pressure before use.

What maintenance do hydraulic cable cutters need?

While hydraulic cutters can have complex inner components, maintenance is relatively straightforward to ensure they work efficiently. Our recommended maintenance routine incudes:

  • Cleaning blades after use with a microfiber cloth, brush or compressed air

  • Visual inspection after use or periodically to check for excessive wear

  • If possible, checking hydraulic fluid levels through sight glass, LED indicators or opening up the unit by trained professionals

  • If you need to replace oil, do so using the correct oil to maintain recommended viscosity and purge air from the device

  • Scheduled servicing based on manufacturer guidelines
