Have you done everything you need to before summer?

Here’s how to prepare your jobsite!

When summer is imminent it means we’re about to enter the busiest part of the year for construction companies. Longer daylight hours and drier conditions are ideal, making it possible to work more efficiently and cut project timelines.

It’s also a time that brings unique challenges, so it’s vital for businesses to plan ahead and get everything in order before summer arrives.

Clearing jobs before the summer season

Making the most of the summer season means spending as many work hours as possible on site. You don’t want to waste the dry, sunny days. However, no matter how good the conditions there are still off-site tasks that you need to do.

That includes administration, training, certification and other essentials that you will need to work as efficiently as possible during the sunny months. If you plan ahead, you can get these tasks completed and cleared ahead of time so that you can optimise your working hours during summer and make as much progress on site as possible.

Ensure you have enough capacity

You can’t get the most out of summer if you don’t have enough workers on site. Sourcing additional contractors and getting them integrated into your workflow is one of the most impactful things you can do ahead of the busy summer season.

However, every company out there will be trying to do the same thing. That makes it vital to get ahead of the competition and secure additional sub-contractors before the summer starts so you can maximise productivity over the coming months.

Stocking up on materials and tools

The same principle applies to the materials and equipment you will need. Busier sites mean more work gets done, and that requires more of everything. The earlier you stock up, the likelier it is that you will have everything you need and won’t be affected by any shortages over the summer.

It’s a key way to prepare your business ahead of the busy season so you won’t suffer from peaks and troughs in availability. For example, if you lease tools through a programme like Hilti Fleet Management, it is easy to look ahead and ensure you have everything you need to handle the busy season.

You can combine that with a construction asset management system and tracking software, such as Hilti’s ON!Track, to make sure that you are getting the most out of your equipment. By using both systems, you can acquire all the extra tools you need without over ordering to ensure productivity is maximised without losing control of costs.

Health and safety concerns

Finally, you should make sure to consider the health and safety challenges presented by hotter weather. It’s the best time to build and your efficiency is likely to increase, but you also have to look after your workers when they are in hotter conditions for longer periods of time.

You could consider educating your workers on the dangers of overexposure to the sun, and providing PPE that helps them to avoid those problems. You could also invest in cooling units on site, provide sun cream or other SPF protective products, and make sure water is readily available at all times.
