Installing resin anchors immediately below a brick free edge (a window opening)

I am installing a series of steel brackets which are resin anchored along a single skin brick wall. Some of the anchors sit immediately below window openings. What are the minimum requirements in terms of distance between the anchors and the free edge of the brickwork. Can you install to the top course of brick? If not where can I read the guidelines?

Thank you for your question. Assuming you are in the UK then we would refer you to BS8539:2012 which provides details regarding the positioning of post installed anchors into masonry structures.

Section 5.3.3.3.2  b) The distance below the top of an unrestrained wall should be sufficient to withstand the forces imposed by either the action or the anchor (e.g. by expansion).

Hi thanks for your reply. 5.3.3.3.2 'recommends' no less than 280mm for masonry. Referring to 5.3.3.2.4, 'Data should be acquired from the manufacturer identifying the edge distance and centre spacings that will provide full performance.' Can you tell me what HILTI recommends for HIT HY 270?

In the UK our recommendation is to follow the information as published by the BS 8539 document unless you can prove that your structure is fully restrained to allow a shorter distance. HILTI though have no published or tested values in such cases and would recommend onsite testing to provide additional reassurance in the overall connection.
