General safety instructions, measuring tools

Work area safety
  • Keep your workplace clean and well lit. Cluttered or poorly lit workplaces invite accidents.
  • Do not operate the product in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust.
  • Keep children and other persons clear when the product is in use.
  • Use the product only within its specified limits.
  • Comply with your national accident prevention regulations.
Electrical safety
  • Do not expose the product to rain or moisture. Penetrating moisture can cause short circuits, electrical shock, burns or explosions.
  • Although the product is protected against the entry of moisture, it should be wiped dry before being put away in its transport container.
Personal safety
  • Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a measuring tool. Do not use a measuring tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating the measuring tool can result in serious personal injury.
  • Avoid unusual body positions. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
  • Wear personal protective equipment. Wearing personal protective equipment reduces the risk of injury.
  • Do not render safety devices ineffective and do not remove information and warning notices.
  • Avoid accidental starting. Make sure that the measuring tool is switched off before connecting it to the battery and before picking it up or carrying it.
  • Use the product and accessories in accordance with these instructions and in the way specified for this special type of tool. Take the working conditions and the work to be performed into account. Use of products for applications different from those intended could result in hazardous situations.
  • Do not lull yourself into a false sense of security and do not flout the safety rules for measuring tools, even if you are familiar with the measuring tool after using it many times. Carelessness can result in serious injury within a fraction of a second.
  • Do not use the measuring tool in the vicinity of medical devices.
Using and handling the measuring tool
  • Use the product and accessories only when they are in perfect working order.
  • Store measuring tools out of reach of children when not in use. Do not allow persons who are not familiar with the product or these instructions to operate it. Measuring tools are dangerous in the hands of inexperienced persons.
  • Measuring tools need care and attention. Check that moving parts operate satisfactorily and do not jam, and make sure that no parts are broken or damaged in such a way that the measuring tool might no longer function correctly. Have damaged parts repaired before using the measuring tool. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained measuring tools.
  • Do not under any circumstances modify or tamper with the product. Changes or modifications not expressly approved by Hilti may restrict the user’s authorization to operate the product.
  • Check the accuracy of the measuring tool before using it for important measurements, and if it has been dropped or subjected to other mechanical stresses.
  • Due to the measuring principle employed, the results of measurements can be negatively affected by certain ambient conditions. These include, for example, the proximity of devices that produce strong magnetic or electro-magnetic fields, vibrations and temperature changes.
  • Rapidly changing measuring conditions can falsify the results.
  • When the product is brought into a warm environment from very cold conditions, or vice-versa, allow it to become acclimatized before use. Big differences in temperature can lead to incorrect operation and incorrect results.
  • When adapters or accessories are used, make sure they are mounted securely.
  • The measuring tool is designed for the tough conditions of jobsite use, but as with other optical and electrical products (e.g. binoculars, spectacles, cameras) it must be handled with care.
  • The specified operating and storage temperatures must be observed.

Additional safety instructions

  • Never tamper with or modify the product or accessories in any way.
  • Risk of injury by falling tools and/or accessories. Before starting work, check that the battery and installed accessories are secure.
  • Protect the measuring tool against moisture and direct sunlight.
  • Make sure that the measuring tool is correctly acclimatized. When temperature fluctuations are strong, acclimatization time can be up to 60 minutes. This can be the case, for example, if you keep the measuring tool in a cold car and then perform measurement inside a warm building.
  • Protect the measuring tool, particularly the areas of the infrared lens, speaker and microphone, against moisture, snow, dust and dirt. The receiving lens could become fogged or dirtied and falsify the results of measurement. Incorrect settings and other atmospheric influencing factors can lead to incorrect measurements. Objects could be visualized with too high or too low a temperature, which can possibly lead to a hazard on touching.
  • High temperature differences in a thermal image can result in high temperatures being visualized in a color associated with low temperatures. Contact with a surface visualized in this way can lead to burns.
  • Correct temperature measurements are possible only when the set emissivity and the emissivity of the object match. Objects could be visualized with too high or too low a temperature, which might possibly lead to hazards on touching.
  • Do not aim the measuring tool directly at the sun or toward CO₂ high power lasers. This can lead to damage to the detector.
  • Do not bring the magnet into proximity to implants or other medical devices, such as a cardiac pacemaker or insulin pump. The magnet produces a field that can impair operation of implants or medical devices.
  • Keep the measuring tool well away from magnetic data carriers and magnetically sensitive devices. The effects of the magnets can cause irreversible data losses.
  • Do not hold the product close to your ears. The sound volume of the product can cause injury and hearing loss.

Careful handling and use of button-cell batteries

  • Never swallow button-cell batteries. Severe internal caustic burns or death can result within 2 hours of swallowing a button-cell battery.
  • Make sure that button-cell batteries are inaccessible to children. Call a poison control center to obtain information on treatment if there is any suspicion that a button-cell battery has been swallowed or inserted into a body orifice.
  • When replacing the button-cell battery, make sure that the correct procedure is followed. Make sure that the button-cell battery is inserted right way round for correct polarity (+ and -). There is a risk of explosion.
  • Always completely close the compartment of the button-cell battery. If the button-cell battery compartment does not close securely, do not keep the product in use and remove the button-cell battery. Keep the button cell battery out of reach of children.
  • Do not mix old and new button-cell batteries, different makes or button-cell battery types, such as alkaline, zinc-carbon or rechargeable button-cell batteries.
  • Use only the button-cell batteries stated in these operating instructions. Do not use any other button-cell batteries or other power supply.
  • Do not attempt to recharge non-rechargeable button-cell batteries. The button-cell battery can develop a leak, explode, catch fire and injure persons.
  • Do not force-discharge, charge, disassemble or incinerate the button-cell battery. Do not heat the button-cell battery to a temperature above the maximum temperature stated by the manufacturer. Otherwise there is a risk of injury by degassing, leakage or explosion leading to chemical burns.
  • Remove the button-cell batteries from products that will be out of use for a lengthy period and recycle them or dispose of them immediately in accordance with your local regulations. Do NOT dispose of button-cell batteries in household waste and do not incinerate them.
  • Remove discharged button-cell batteries and recycle or dispose of them immediately in accordance with your local regulations. Keep button-cell batteries out of reach of children. Do NOT dispose of button-cell batteries in household waste and do not incinerate them. Discharged button-cell batteries can develop leaks and so damage the product or injure persons.
  • Even discharged button-cell batteries can lead to serious injuries or death. Do not treat discharged button-cell batteries with less care than new batteries.
  • Do not bring a damaged button-cell battery into contact with water. In the presence of water, escaping lithium can produce hydrogen and so lead to a fire or an explosion, or cause injury to persons.

Careful handling and use of batteries

  • Comply with the following safety instructions for the safe handling and use of Li-ion batteries. Failure to comply can lead to skin irritation, severe corrosive injury, chemical burns, fire and/or explosion.
  • Use only batteries that are in perfect working order.
  • Treat batteries with care in order to avoid damage and prevent leakage of fluids that are extremely harmful to health!
  • Do not under any circumstances modify or tamper with batteries!
  • Do not disassemble, crush or incinerate batteries and do not subject them to temperatures over 80 °C (176 °F).
  • Never use or charge a battery that has suffered an impact or been damaged in any other way. Check your batteries regularly for signs of damage.
  • Never use recycled or repaired batteries.
  • Never use the battery or a battery-operated power tool as a striking tool.
  • Never expose batteries to the direct rays of the sun, elevated temperature, sparking, or open flame. This can lead to explosions.
  • Do not touch the battery poles with your fingers, tools, jewelry, or other electrically conductive objects. This can damage the battery and also cause material damage and personal injury.
  • Keep batteries away from rain, moisture and liquids. Penetrating moisture can cause short circuits, electric shock, burns, fire and explosions.
  • Use only chargers and power tools approved for the specific battery type. Read and follow the relevant operating instructions.
  • Do not use or store the battery in explosive environments.
  • If the battery is too hot to touch, it may be defective. Put the battery in a place where it is clearly visible and where there is no risk of fire, at an adequate distance from flammable materials. Allow the battery to cool down. If it is still too hot to touch after an hour, the battery is faulty. Consult Hilti Service or read the document entitled "Instructions on safety and use for Hilti Li-ion batteries".

Intended use

The product described is a thermal imaging camera. The thermal imaging camera is designed for the non-contact measurement of surface temperatures. The thermal image displayed indicates the temperature distribution of the thermal imaging camera's field of view, enabling temperature variations to be visualized as differences in color. In this way, correct use enables surfaces and objects to be subjected to non-contacting examination for temperature differences or anomalies to render components and/or weaknesses, if present, visible, including:

  • thermal envelopes and insulation (e.g. to identify thermal bridges)

  • active heating-water and hot-water lines (e.g. underfloor heating) in floor and walls

  • overheated electrical components (e.g. fuses or terminals in switchgear cabinets)

  • faulty or damaged parts of machinery (e.g. overheating due to faulty ball bearings)

The measuring tool is suitable for use indoors and outdoors. USA/Canada: Use the measuring tool only indoors.

Preparations at the workplace

WARNING

  • Remove the battery before making any adjustments to the power tool or before changing accessories.

Charging the battery

  1. Before charging the battery, read the operating instructions for the charger.
  2. Make sure that the contacts on the battery and the contacts on the charger are clean and dry.
  3. Use an approved charger to charge the battery.

Inserting the battery

WARNING
Risk of injury by short circuit or falling battery!
  • Before inserting the battery, make sure that the contacts on the battery and the contacts on the product are free of foreign matter.
  • Make sure that the battery always engages correctly.
  1. Charge the battery fully before using it for the first time.
  2. Push the battery into the product until it engages with an audible click.
  3. Check that the battery is seated securely.

Removing the battery

  1. Press the battery release button.
  2. Remove the battery from the product.

Fall arrest

WARNING
Risk of injury by falling tool and/or accessory!
  • Use only the Hilti tool tether recommended for your product.
  • Prior to each use, always check the attachment point of the tool tether for possible damage.
  • Do not secure a tool tether to the belt hook. Do not use a belt hook to lift the product.
Comply with the national regulations for working at heights.
As drop arrester for this product, use only the Hilti tool tether #2261971.

Operation

Flip the protective cap open for measuring. Make sure that the infrared sensor is not capped or obstructed while you are working.

Switching on / off

  1. To switch the measuring tool on, press the on/off button.
    • A start sequence appears on the display.
    • After the start sequence, the measuring tool immediately starts measuring and continues to measure until it is switched off.
    During the first minutes the measuring tool might recalibrate frequently because sensor temperature and ambient temperature have not yet equalized. The repeated sensor calibration enables accurate measurement.
    During this time the temperature readout might show ~. The thermal image freezes briefly while sensor calibration is in progress. Severe fluctuations in ambient temperature intensify this effect. Consequently, switch the measuring tool on a few minutes before the start of measurement so that it can stabilize itself thermally.
  2. To switch the measuring tool off, press the on/off button.
    • The measuring tool saves all settings and then switches off.
  3. Close the protective cap for safe transport of the measuring tool.

Assignment of temperatures on the basis of the scale

The scale is shown on the right-hand side of the display. The values at the top and bottom ends orient themselves by the maximum temperature and the minimum temperature registered in the thermal image. 99.9 % of the entire set of pixels are analyzed for the scale. Assignment of a color to a temperature value in the image is linear.
The different color tones, therefore, correlate to temperatures within these two boundary values. A temperature that is exactly midway between maximum and minimum, for example, is in the middle of the scale's color range.
To determine the temperature of a given area, position the measuring tool in such a way that the crosshairs with temperature reading are aimed at the desired spot or area. In the automatic setting, the color spectrum of the scale is always distributed linearly over the entire measured area within the maximum and minimum temperatures.
The measuring tool shows all measured temperatures in the measured area in relation to each other. If the heat in an area in a colored visualization for example is shown blue in the color palette, this means that the blueish areas belong to the colder measured values in the current measured area. However, these areas might well be in a temperature range that can lead to injuries under certain circumstances. Consequently, always check the temperature readings shown on the scale or directly where the crosshairs are located.

Setting emissivity for surface temperature measurements

An object's emissivity ε depends on the material and the structure of the surface. It is a measure of the infrared heat emission of the object compared to an ideal heat emitter (black body, emissivity ε = 1) and is therefore a value between 0 and 1.
Surface temperature is determined by non-contact measurement of the natural infrared heat emitted by the targeted object. For correct measurements the emissivity set in the measuring tool has to be checked before each measurement and, if necessary, adapted to the object to be measured.
The measuring tool's emissivity presets are guide values.
You can select one of the emisssivity presets or enter an exact numerical value. To set the desired emissivity, navigate to ‘Measurement’‘Emissivity’ .
Correct temperature measurements are possible only when the set emissivity and the emissivity of the object match.
The lower the emissivity, the greater is the influence of reflected temperature on the measured result. Consequently, whenever emissivity changes you must always adjust the reflected temperature accordingly. To set the reflected temperature, navigate to ‘Measurement’‘Reflected Temp.’ .
Apparent temperature differences shown by the measuring tool might be due to different temperatures and/or different emissivities. If emissivities differ strongly, the temperature differences shown by the tool might vary considerably from the real differences.
If there are two or more objects of different materials or different structure in the measured area, the temperature values displayed by the tool are accurate only for the object or objects for which the emissivity setting is correct. For all the other objects (with different emissivities), the color differences can be used as indicators for temperature relationships.

Emissivity table

This table serves as a guide for setting emissivity. It tabulates the emissivity ε of some common materials. Emissivity varies with temperature and surface condition, so the values stated here should be considered only as guide values for the measurement of temperature ratios or temperature differences. The emissivity of the material has to be determined exactly in order for the absolute value of the temperature to be measured.

Notes on the measuring conditions

  • Highly reflective or shiny surfaces (e.g. shiny tiles or bright metals) can badly falsify or impair the displayed results. If necessary, mask the surface to be measured with a dark, matt and thermally conductive adhesive tape. Wait briefly to allow the adhesive tape to adjust to the temperature to the surface.
  • When surfaces are reflective, be sure to use an appropriate measuring angle so that reflected thermal radiation from other objects does not falsify the result. For example when measuring perpendicular to the surface from in front, the reflection of your own body heat can impair measurement. If the surface is smooth the outlines and temperature of your body (reflected value) that do not correspond to the actual temperature of the measured surface (emitted value or real value of the surface) might be displayed.
  • On account of the principle employed, measurement through transparent materials (e.g. glass or transparent plastics) is not possible.
  • The better and more stable the measuring conditions, the more accurate and reliable the measured results will be. Not only strong temperature fluctuations of the ambient conditions but also strong fluctuations in the temperatures of the measured object can impair accuracy.
  • Infrared temperature measurement is impaired by smoke or vapor in the air, high air humidity or dusty air.
  • Approach as close as possible to the object to be measured, in order to minimize interference factors between you and the surface to be measured.
  • Ventilate enclosed spaces before taking measurements, particularly if the air is dirty or very vapor-laden. After ventilating, wait until the temperature inside the room has returned to normal.

Size of area scanned

The distance between object to be measured and measuring tool influences the size of the area scanned per pixel. The greater the distance from the object, the larger the objects you can scan.

Functions

Adjusting coloration

Image alternative
Depending on the measuring situation, different color palettes can facilitate analysis of the thermal image and render objects or circumstances clearer in the display. This does not influence the measured temperatures. The only change is to the way in which the temperature values are visualized.
To change the color palette, stay in the measuring mode and press the Right button or the Left button.

Superimposition of thermal image and real image

Image alternative
For better orientation (= localization of a displayed thermal image in space), a visual real image can be superimposed if the temperature ranges are balanced.
The superimposition of real image and thermal image is an exact overlay at a distance of 0.55 m (21.7 in). On account of the principle employed, at distances other than this there is some offset between real image and thermal image of the object to be measured.
    The measuring tool offers you the following possibilities:
  • 100 % infrared image
    Only the thermal image is displayed.
  • Image in image
    The thermal image displayed is cropped and the surrounding area is shown as a real image. This setting improves localization of the measured area.
  • Transparency
    The displayed thermal image is superimposed as a transparent image on the real image. This makes objects easier to identify.
You can select a setting by pressing the Up button or the Down button.

Fixing the scale

Color distribution in the thermal image is adapted automatically, but it can also be fixed by pressing the Right function button. This enables comparability across thermal images imaged under differing temperature conditions (e.g. for checking several rooms for heat bridges) or it can also be used to hide an extremely cold or extremely hot object in the thermal image that would otherwise distort the image (e.g. radiator as hot object in a search for heat bridges).
To reset the scale to automatic, press the Right function button again. The temperatures behave dynamically again and adapt to the measured minimum and maximum values.

Measuring functions

To access other functions that can help you with the readings, press the Func button. Use the Left and Right buttons to navigate through the displayed options in order to select a function. Select a function and press the Func button again.
    The following measuring functions are available to you:
  • ‘Automatic’
    Color distribution in the thermal image is automatic.
  • ‘Heat Detector’
    In this measuring function only the warmer temperatures in the measured area are shown as a thermal image. The area outside these warmer temperatures is shown as a real image in grayscales. Depiction in grayscales prevents colored objects from being incorrectly associated with temperatures (e.g. red-colored cable in switchgear cabinet in a search for overheated components). Use the Up and Down buttons to adjust the scale. This correspondingly extends or reduces the temperature range shown as a thermal image. The measuring tool continues to measure minimum and maximum temperatures and shows these readings at the corresponding ends of the scale.
  • ‘Cold Detector’
    In this measuring function only the colder temperatures in the measured area are shown as a thermal image. The area outside these colder temperatures is shown as a real image in grayscales to prevent colored objects from being incorrectly associated with temperatures (e.g. blue-colored window frame in a search for faulty insulation). Use the Up and Down buttons to adjust the scale. This correspondingly extends or reduces the temperature range shown as a thermal image. The measuring tool continues to measure minimum and maximum temperatures and shows these readings at the corresponding ends of the scale.
  • ‘Manual’
    If strongly varying temperatures are measured in the thermal image (e.g. a radiator as a hot object in an examination to identify heat bridges), the colors available are distributed across a high number of temperature values in the range between the maximum and minimum temperatures. This can lead to a loss of detailed distinction over fine differences in temperature. To obtain a detailed visualization of the temperature range being examined, proceed as follows: After switching to the ‘Manual’ mode, you can set the maximum and minimum temperatures. In this way you can define the temperature range that is relevant for you and within which you want to make fine distinctions. The ‘Reset scale’ setting automatically resets the scale to the measured values in the infrared sensor's field of view.

Main menu

To access the main menu, first press the Func button to call up the measuring functions. Then press the Right function button.

‘Measurement’

  • ‘Emissivity’
    Emissivities for some of the most common materials are saved in memory as presets. To make searching easier, the values are arranged in groups in the emissivity catalog. In the ‘Material’ menu item, begin by selecting the appropriate category and then select the appropriate material. The associated emissivity is shown in the line below. If you know the exact emissivity of the object to be measured, you can enter it as a numerical value in the ‘Emissivity’ menu item. If you measure the same material frequently, you can save 5 emissivities as favorites and access them quickly in the topmost bar (numbered 1 to 5).
  • ‘Reflected Temp.’
    The setting of this parameter can improve the measured result particularly in the case of materials with low emissivity (= high reflection). In some situations (especially inside closed spaces) the reflected temperature corresponds to the ambient temperature. If objects with strongly differing temperatures in the vicinity of strongly reflective objects can influence measurement, you should adapt this value accordingly.

‘Display’

  • ‘Centerspot’
    The spot is shown centered in the thermal image and shows you the measured temperature value at this position.
  • ‘Hotspot’‘ON’  ⁄ ‘OFF’
    The hottest spot (= measuring pixel) of the thermal image is marked by red crosshairs in the thermal image. This makes it easier to search for critical places (e.g. loose contact terminal in the switchgear cabinet). To obtain as accurate a measurement as possible, focus the object to be measured in the center of the display (85 × 64 px). In this way the corresponding temperature value of this object to be measured will also be shown.
  • ‘Coldspot’‘ON’  ⁄ ‘OFF’
    The coldest spot (= measuring pixel) of the thermal image is marked by blue crosshairs in the thermal image. This makes it easier to search for critical places (e.g. leak at the window). To obtain as accurate a measurement as possible, focus the object to be measured in the center of the display (85 × 64 px).
  • ‘Color Scale’‘ON’ ⁄ ‘OFF’
    This menu item lets you activate or deactivate the color scale.
  • ‘Average Temp.’‘ON’ ⁄ ‘OFF’
    The average temperature is shown at the top left of the thermal image (average temperature across all measured values in the thermal image). This can make it easier for you to determine the reflected temperature

‘Tool’

  • ‘Language’
    Use this menu item to select the language used in the visualization.
  • ‘Unit’
    This menu item lets you change the unit for the temperature reading between ‘°C’ and ‘°F’ (not applicable for Japan).
  • ‘Time & Date’
    To change time and date, navigate to the ‘Time & Date’ submenu. In this submenu, in addition to setting time and date you can also change the corresponding display formats. To exit the ‘Time’ and ‘Date’ submenu, press either the right function button to save the settings or the left function button to discard the changes.
  • ‘Shutdown Time’
    Use this menu item to select the time interval after which the measuring tool will automatically shut down if no button is pressed. You can also deactivate automatic shutdown by selecting the ‘Never’ setting.
  • ‘High audio quality’
    Use this menu item to adapt the quality of the recorded audio file via voice memo. Bear in mind that high audio quality requires more space in memory.
  • ‘Tool Information’
    Use this menu item to call up information about the measuring tool. You can view the serial number of the measuring tool and see which software version is installed.
  • ‘Factory settings’
    Use this menu item to reset the measuring tool to the default settings and irrevocably delete all data. Under certain circumstances, this can take several minutes. Press the right button for ‘More’ to access the submenu. Then either press the right function button to delete all files or press the left function button to cancel the operation.
To exit any menu and return to the default display screen, you can also press the "Start/pause measurement" button.

Documentation of measured results

Saving measured results

The measuring tool starts measuring as soon as it is switched on and it measures continuously until it is switched off.
To save an image, aim the camera at the object to be measured and press the Save button. The image is saved to the measuring tool's internal memory. Alternatively, press the Start/pause measurement button. Measurement is paused and the frozen image is shown on the display. This lets you study the image immediately and make changes to the settings (e.g. to the color palette). If you decide not to save the frozen image, press the Start/pause measurement button to resume the measuring mode. If you decide to save the image to the measuring tool's internal memory, press the Save button.

Recording a voice memo

You can record a voice memo to log ambient conditions or capture additional information about the thermal image you saved. This is saved along with the thermal image and the visual image and can be exported later on.
It is advisable to record voice memos as a way of ensuring better documentation.
The microphone is behind the keypad, beside the microphone symbol. Speak toward the microphone. You can record a memo up to 30 seconds in length.
    The voice memo is saved to the Gallery. Proceed as follows:
  • Press the Left function button to access the Gallery.
  • Press the Func button. Recording starts. Record all the relevant information.
  • To end recording either press the Func button again or press the Right function button.
  • To cancel recording, press the Left function button. After recording your voice memo you can play it back.
  • To play back the recording, press the Func button again. The recording is played back.
    To pause playback, press the Right function button. To resume playback after a pause, press the Right function button again.
    To stop playback, press the Left function button.
To record a new voice memo, delete the existing voice memo and start recording again.

Retrieving saved images

The visual image is also saved along with the thermal image. To retrieve this image, press the Down button.
    To retrieve thermal images saved in memory, proceed as follows:
  • Press the Left function button. The most recently saved photo appears in the display.
  • To switch between the thermal images saved in memory, press the Right button or the Left button.
You can also view the saved thermal image as a full-screen image by pressing the Up button. In the full-screen view the title bar is hidden after 3 seconds so that you can study all the details of the thermal image.
Use the Up and Down buttons to toggle between views.

Deleting saved images and voice memos

Data fragments of the images remain in internal memory and the images can be reconstructed. To delete images irretrievably, go to the main menu and select ‘Tool’‘Factory settings’ .
    To delete individual thermal images or all thermal images, switch to the Gallery view:
  • Press the Right function button below the trashcan symbol. A submenu opens. You can choose whether to delete only this image, only the associated voice memo (if you have recorded one) or all images. If you want to delete only this image or the voice memo, confirm your intention by pressing the Func button.
  • If you want to delete all images, press the Func button or the Right unction button, then confirm your intention by pressing the Right function button or cancel deletion by pressing the Left function button.

Data Transfer

The USB interface is for data transfer only. Batteries or other devices cannot be recharged via this port.
  1. Open the cover over the USB port.
  2. With the measuring tool switched off, use the USB cable to establish the connection between the USB port on the tool and your PC.
    Use the USB interface only for connecting the measuring tool to a PC. Attempts to connect to other devices can damage the measuring tool.
  3. Switch the measuring tool on.
  4. Open the file browser on your PC and select "PT‑C " as the drive. The files saved in the measuring tool's internal memory can be copied, moved to your PC, or deleted.
  5. As soon as you have completed the desired procedure, disconnect the drive in the standard way.
    Invariably, you first have to log out the drive from your PC's operating system (Eject drive), as otherwise the measuring tool's internal memory can be damaged.
  6. Then switch the measuring tool off at the on/off switch.
  7. Disconnect the USB cable and close the cover over the USB port to protect against dirt and spray.

Care and maintenance

  • Always remove the battery before carrying out care and maintenance tasks!
Care of the product
  • Carefully remove stubborn dirt.
  • Carefully clean the air vents, if present, with a dry, soft brush.
  • Use only a slightly damp cloth to clean the housing. Do not use cleaning agents containing silicone as these can attack the plastic parts.
  • Use a dry, clean cloth to clean the contacts of the product.
  • Keep the measuring tool clean at all times. A dirty infrared sensor can impair measuring accuracy.
  • Do not use pointed objects to attempt to remove dirt from the infrared sensor, camera, speaker or microphone. Blow dust off the infrared sensor and camera. Do not wipe the infrared sensor and camera (risk of scratching).
Care of the Li‑ion batteries
  • Never use a battery with clogged air vents. Clean the air vents carefully using a dry, soft brush.
  • Avoid unnecessary exposure of the battery to dust and dirt. Never expose the battery to high levels of moisture (e.g. by being dipped in water or left in the rain).
    If a battery has been soaked by moisture, treat it as a damaged battery. Isolate it in a non-flammable container and consult Hilti Service.
  • Keep the battery free of extraneous oil and grease. Do not permit dust or dirt to accumulate unnecessarily on the battery. Clean the battery with a dry, soft brush or a clean, dry cloth. Do not use cleaning agents containing silicone as these can attack the plastic parts.
    Do not touch the contacts of the battery and do not remove the factory-applied grease from the contacts.
  • Use only a slightly damp cloth to clean the housing. Do not use cleaning agents containing silicone as these can attack the plastic parts.
Maintenance
WARNING
Danger of electric shock! Improper repairs to electrical components may lead to serious injuries including burns.
  • Repairs to the electrical section of the tool or appliance may be carried out only by trained electrical specialists.
  • Check all visible parts and controls for signs of damage at regular intervals and make sure that they all function correctly.
  • Do not use the product if signs of damage are found or if parts malfunction. Immediately have the product repaired by Hilti Service.
  • After cleaning and maintenance, install all guards and protective devices and check that they are in full working order.

Changing button-cell battery

The measuring tool has a button-cell battery to enable it to save the date and time. The button-cell battery has to be changed when it is discharged.

  1. Slacken the screw of the button-cell battery holder.
    • The screw is captive in the button-cell battery holder.
  2. Ease the button-cell battery holder out of its slot (using a suitable tool if necessary).
  3. Remove the empty button-cell battery and insert a new button-cell battery. Make sure that polarity is correct. The "+" engraved in the button-cell battery holder and the positive pole of the button-cell battery must visibly match.
  4. Re-insert the button-cell battery holder into its slot. Make sure that the button-cell battery holder is inserted correctly and fully, as otherwise protection against dust and spray is not ensured.
  5. Tighten the screw of the button-cell battery holder hand-tight.

Hilti Measuring Systems Service

Hilti Measuring Systems Service checks the scanning tool and, if deviations from the specified accuracy are found, recalibrates it and rechecks to ensure conformity with specifications. The service certificate provides written confirmation of conformity with specifications at the time of the test. The following is recommended:
  • Choose a test/inspection interval that matches usage of the device.
  • Have the product checked by Hilti Measuring Systems Service after exceptionally heavy use or subjection to unusual conditions or stress, before important work or at least once a year.
Testing and inspection by Hilti Measuring Systems Service does not relieve the user of the obligation to check the scanning tool before and during use.

Transport and storage

  • Always transport your products with the batteries removed!
  • Remove the battery/batteries.
  • Never transport batteries loose and unprotected. During transport, batteries should be protected from excessive shock and vibration and isolated from any conductive materials or other batteries that may come in contact with the terminals and cause a short circuit. Comply with the locally applicable regulations for transporting batteries.
  • Do not send batteries through the mail. Consult your shipper for instructions on how to ship undamaged batteries.
  • Prior to each use and before and after prolonged transport, check the product and the batteries for damage.
Storage of cordless power tools and batteries
    WARNING
    Accidental damage caused by defective or leaking batteries !
  • Always store your products with the batteries removed!
  • Store the product and the batteries in a cool and dry place. Comply with the temperature limits stated in the technical data.
  • Do not store batteries on the charger. Always remove the battery from the charger when the charging operation has completed.
  • Never leave batteries in direct sunlight, on sources of heat, or behind glass.
  • Store the product and batteries where they cannot be accessed by children or unauthorized persons.
  • Prior to each use and before and after prolonged storage, check the product and the batteries for damage.

Hilti Li-ion batteries

Instructions for safety and useThis documentation uses the term battery to describe rechargeable Hilti Li-ion battery packs containing several Li-ion cells joined together. These batteries are to be used in Hilti power tools exclusively. Use only genuine Hilti batteries!
DescriptionHilti batteries have cell-management and cell-protection systems.
The batteries are composed of cells that contain lithium-ion storage materials capable of providing high specific energy density. Li-ion cells have a minimal memory effect, but they are very susceptible to external impact, deep discharge, and high temperatures.
The products approved for use with Hilti batteries can be found in your Hilti Store or at: www.hilti.group
Safety
  • Comply with the following safety instructions for the safe handling and use of Li-ion batteries. Failure to comply can lead to skin irritation, severe corrosive injury, chemical burns, fire and/or explosion.
  • Treat batteries with care in order to avoid damage and prevent leakage of fluids that are extremely harmful to health!
  • Do not under any circumstances modify or tamper with batteries!
  • Do not disassemble, crush or incinerate batteries and do not subject them to temperatures over 80 °C.
  • Never use or charge a battery that has suffered an impact or been damaged in any other way. Check your batteries regularly for signs of damage.
  • Never use recycled or repaired batteries.
  • Never use the battery or a battery-operated power tool as a striking tool.
  • Never expose batteries to the direct rays of the sun, elevated temperature, sparking, or open flame. This can lead to explosions.
  • Do not touch the battery poles with your fingers, tools, jewelry, or other electrically conductive objects. This can damage the battery and also cause material damage and personal injury.
  • Keep batteries away from rain, moisture and liquids. Penetrating moisture can cause short circuits, electric shock, burns, fire and explosions.
  • Use only chargers and power tools approved for the specific battery type. Read and follow the relevant operating instructions.
  • Do not use or store the battery in explosive environments.
  • If the battery is too hot to touch it may be defective. Put the battery in a place where it is clearly visible and where there is no risk of fire, at an adequate distance from flammable materials. Allow the battery to cool down. If it is still too hot to touch after an hour, the battery is faulty. Follow the instructions in the section headed What to do in case of a battery fire .
What to do in case of damaged batteries
  • Always contact Hilti when a battery is damaged.
  • Never use a battery that is leaking fluid.
  • Avoid direct eye and/or skin contact with fluid leaking from a battery. Always wear protective gloves and eye protection when undertaking tasks involving battery fluid.
  • Use a chemical spill cleanup kit to remove leaked battery fluid. Comply with the locally applicable cleanup regulations for battery fluid.
  • To store a damaged battery, place the battery in a non-flammable container and cover the battery with dry sand, chalk powder (CaCO3) or silicate (Vermiculite). Then seal the lid air-tight and store the container away from flammable gases, liquids or objects.
  • Dispose of the container at your Hilti Store , or consult your local governmental garbage disposal or public health and safety resources for disposal instructions. Comply with the locally applicable regulations for transporting damaged batteries!
What to do in case of dysfunctional batteries
  • Watch for abnormal battery behavior, such as faulty charging, unusually long charging times, noticeable power loss, unusual LED activity, or leaking fluids. These are signs of an internal problem.
  • If you suspect an internal battery problem, contact Hilti Service.
  • A battery that no longer works, cannot be recharged or leaks fluid has to be disposed of correctly. See the section headed Maintenance and disposal .
What to do in case of a battery fire
    WARNING
    Battery fire hazard! A burning battery releases hazardous and potentially explosive liquids and fumes that can lead to corrosion injuries, burns or explosions.
  • Wear your personal protective equipment when you tackle a battery fire.
  • Provide sufficient venting to permit hazardous and potentially explosive fumes to escape.
  • Leave the room immediately in case of intense smoke emission.
  • Consult a doctor in case of any skin or respiratory irritation.
  • Alert the fire service before you start tackling the fire.
  • Use only water to tackle a battery fire and keep as far from the fire as effective extinguishing permits. Powder fire extinguishers and fire blankets are ineffective with Li-ion batteries. Fire in nearby materials can be extinguished with appropriate extinguishing agents.
  • Do not try to move large quantities of burning batteries. Instead, isolate the batteries by removing unaffected materials from the immediate vicinity.
In the case of a battery that does not cool down, or a smoking or burning battery:
  • Scoop the battery up with a shovel and drop it into a bucket of water, which will reduce the risk of igniting adjacent cells that have not yet reached run-away temperature.
  • Leave the battery in the bucket for at least 24 hours until it has cooled down completely.

Shipping and storage
  • Ambient operating temperature to be kept between -17°C and +60°C / 1°F and 140°F.
  • Storage temperature to be kept between -20°C and +40°C / -4°F and 104°F.
  • Do not store batteries on the charger. Always remove the battery from the charger when the charging operation has completed.
  • Store batteries in a cool and dry place. Cool storage will increase battery life. Never store batteries where they are exposed to direct sunlight, on sources of heat or behind glass.
  • Do not send batteries through the mail. Consult your shipper for instructions on how to ship undamaged batteries.
  • Never transport batteries in bulk form (loose, unprotected). During transport, batteries should be protected from excessive shock and vibration and isolated from any conductive materials or other batteries that may come in contact with the terminals and cause a short circuit. Comply with the locally applicable regulations for transporting batteries.
Maintenance and disposal
  • Keep the battery free of oil and grease. Do not permit dust or dirt to accumulate unnecessarily on the battery. Clean the battery with a dry, soft brush or a clean, dry rag.
  • Never use a battery with clogged ventilation slots. Clean the ventilation slots carefully using a dry, soft brush.
  • Prevent unnecessary exposure of the battery to dust or debris and never subject the battery to soaking moisture (e.g., submerged in water or left out in the rain).
  • If a battery is exposed to soaking moisture, treat it as a damaged battery and isolate it in a non-flammable container.

  • Improper disposal may cause health hazards from leaking gases or fluids. Dispose of the battery at your Hilti Store , or consult your local governmental garbage disposal or public health and safety resources for disposal instructions. Comply with the locally applicable regulations for transporting damaged batteries!
  • Do not dispose of batteries as household waste.
  • Dispose of your battery out of the reach of children. Cover the terminals with a non-conductive material (such as electrical tape) to prevent short circuiting.
