FAQs

The main difference between SDS Plus and SDS Max rotary hammer drills lies in their respective size and power

What’s the Difference between SDS Plus and SDS Max?

The main difference between SDS Plus and SDS Max rotary hammer drills lies in their respective size and power. In essence:

  • SDS Plus tools are designed for light to medium‑duty work such as drilling anchor holes, fixing brackets, and light chiseling in concrete or brick.

  • SDS Max tools deliver much higher impact energy (joules), for large‑diameter drilling, chasing, and demolition – especially more durable for continuous concrete work.

SDS Plus drill bits CAN be used in an SDS Max tool, but only if an adaptor is used.

Can SDS Plus bits be used in an SDS Max hammer drill?

SDS Plus drill bits CAN be used in an SDS Max tool, but only if an adaptor is used. However, the preference and recommended approach is to use drill bits that are designed for their relevant tools.

On the other hand, SDS Max drill bits can NOT be used in an SDS Plus tool.

Both SDS Max and Plus bits have different chuck types and locking systems, so cannot be directly used in their non-native systems.

What size holes can I make with an SDS Plus and SDS Max drill?

The size of holes you can drill with SDS Plus and SDS Max drill bits differs between the two tool types.

SDS Plus drills can make holes from 4mm to around 30mm. While there are some inserts such as percussion bits, which can make larger openings, the most common sizes of drill bit and holes are between 4 and 30mm.

SDS Max drill bits can make holes from 12mm to 50mm and above. Similar to the SDS Plus, other inserts are available which can make larger openings.
